Your library card does more than give you access to materials from 43 libraries across the county! Use library computers for school, work or fun. Download and stream digital content to your phone or eReader. Get information from library databases, from language courses to test prep, genealogy to car repair.
Allegheny County Residents: If you are a resident of Allegheny County, you are eligible for a library card. This card can be used at any Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh location and all public libraries in Allegheny County.
Out of County Residents: If you are a Pennsylvania resident living outside of Allegheny County and you have an Access PA card from your local library, you may be eligible for a free library card by visiting an Allegheny County Library Association public library in person.
University Students: Students who reside in on-campus or off-campus housing within Allegheny County are eligible for a library card. Click here to learn more.

Due to funding limitations, we regret that we cannot offer remote membership to anyone who cannot visit one of our libraries.
The Classic Card is free to residents of Allegheny County or Pennsylvania residents with an Access PA library card. To apply, stop by any Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh location and present a valid photo ID, showing proof of current address.
- Minors age birth-12 require a parent to present ID and sign for the account.
- Minors age 13-17 with their own ID may register for their own account. A parental notification will be sent by mail.
- Minors age 13-17 with photo ID but no proof of address may request a postal mailer. Please speak with a staff member for more information.
Classic Cards expire every two years.
You can apply for a temporary card number online which can be used to place holds and access some online resources. After submission of information, you will receive a card number that can be used for 30 days. You can validate and receive your permanent library card when you go to any Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh location. Validation requires that you present photo identification with proof of current address.
Lost Library Cards
If you lose your card or you suspect that it has been stolen, report the missing card immediately. Call 412.622.3114.
Most library cards expire every two years and can be reactivated with proper ID.
