Lesson Plans
The Super Science @ Your Library program is for students in grades K-5. The programs provide the students with hands-on experiments that demonstrate the importance of science in their lives and encourage them to think critically and creatively. Programs expand on the Pittsburgh Public Schools curriculum. It includes four sessions: Inventors & Inventions, Machine Mania, Recycling, Wet & Wild.
Arbor Day
Grades K-2 and 3-5
Children will learn about trees through stories and hands-on science activities.
Inventors and Inventions: Bridges
Grades 3-5
Children will learn about the different types of bridge structures, the inventor John Roebling and his contribution to the bridges of Pittsburgh and the Brooklyn Bridge.
Inventors and Inventions: Electricity
Grades 3-5
Students will learn about Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison and their inventions and experiments with electricity.
Inventors and Inventions: Benjamin Franklin and Leonardo da Vinci
Grades K-2
Children will learn about the inventions of Benjamin Franklin and Leonardo da Vinci.
Inventors and Inventions: Forensics
Grades 3-5
Children will learn how to identify fingerprints and how each fingerprint is unique. They will also learn about the history of forensic science.
Light Science: Fireflies
Grades K-5
Children will gain a greater understanding of the uses and importance of fireflies and bioluminescence, light created by a chemical reaction inside a living thing.
Machine Mania: Robots
Grades 3-5
Children will learn the definition of a robot and about the different types of robots that exist and their functions.

Grades K-2
Children will learn all about Jacques Cousteau and the machines he invented.
Recycling
Grades K-2
Children will learn all about ways they can reduce, reuse and recycle materials.
Recycling: Plastics
Grades 3-5
Children will learn about and explore the characteristics of plastics and polymers, and why it is important to reuse and recycle plastic.
Recycling: Recycled Art
Grades 3-5
Children will learn about artists that create their art through the use of recycled materials.
Wet & Wild: Fish
Grades 3-5
Children will learn all about fish through stories and hands-on science activities.
Wet & Wild: H2O Olympics
Grades 3-5
Children will explore the properties of water through hands-on inquiry based science activities.
Wet & Wild: Rivers
Grades 3-5
Children will learn about rivers and river pollution through stories, informational text and hands-on activities.
Wet & Wild: Whales
Grades K-2
Children will learn all about whales through stories, informational text and hands-on science activities.
