Archival Collections
The following are separate collections and are not a part of the Carnegie Archives.
Board of Public Education, School District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Records: 1861-1980
This collection was a gift from the Board of Public Education to Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in 1989. The records contain material concerning the history of the Board of Public Education and its predecessors, with regard to the administration of the Pittsburgh Public School system. Based on the Board's administrative organization, the collection is divided into six subgroups: Office of the Board of Public Education (and predecessors), subdistrict school boards, Office of Business Affairs, Office of the Superintendent, and the Pittsburgh Public Schools.
The material within each group is arranged either alphabetically or chronologically. Documents include annual reports, publications, clippings, photographs, directories, maps, charts, diagrams and graphs, minute books, financial records, committee and department reports, courses of study, survey commission reports, school histories, and various school records, including enrollment, grade and attendance registers.
Collectively, these records offer a unique insight into the historical development of the Pittsburgh Public School system.
The Friends of the Music Library Collection: 1938-present
In 1938 the Boyd Memorial Musicological Library Association was established and named after Dr. Charles N. Boyd, dean of Pittsburgh musicians and coeditor of the American supplement to Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians.
The two-fold purpose of the BMMLA was to honor Dr. Boyd and to purchase his private library for Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's Music Department, where it would be available for public use.
This association became the nucleus of the organization which is known today as The Friends of the Music Library.
The files are divided into two general categories: Board is the heading used to refer to the board of the FML (also known as the Executive Board and the Luncheon Group); FML is the heading that refers to the society, exclusive of the Board.
The collection consists of correspondence, minutes, financial statements, publicity and public relations, and historical information. Other material on The Friends of the Music Library are housed in The Music Department.
