The Main Library of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh is part of a cultural complex established in Oakland by Andrew Carnegie in 1895. (Refer to the City Map of Central Oakland.) It consists of Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the Carnegie Museum of Art and Carnegie Music Hall. It is located approximately 3.5 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, just beyond the University of Pittsburgh's 42-story Cathedral of Learning.

By Public Transit

Current schedules, fares and routes for public transit are available on the Port Authority of Allegheny County website. You can use their Trip Planner to find the next bus from your location to the library.

From Downtown

  1. Board a 61A (East Pittsburgh), 61B (Braddock-Swissvale), or 61C (McKeesport-Homestead) bus out of Pittsburgh at a stop on Forbes or Fifth Avenue;
    OR
    Board a 67A (Monroeville) bus out of Pittsburgh at a stop on Fifth Avenue or Grant Street Downtown;
    OR
    Board a 67C (Wilkinsburg-Oakland), 67E (Greensburg Pike), 67F (Trafford), or 67J (Lincoln Highway) bus out of Pittsburgh at a stop on Boulevard of the Allies downtown.
  2. Get off the bus in Oakland at the dinosaur statue (the first stop after the Bigelow Boulevard / Schenley Drive intersection).
  3. The 42-story Cathedral of Learning will be to your left. The Carnegie Museums will be on your right.
  4. Walk around the right side of the dinosaur to the Library, which is behind the museums.

From the Airport

  1. Take the 28X Airport Flyer
  2. Get off the bus in Oakland at the dinosaur statue (the first stop after the Bigelow Boulevard / Schenley Drive intersection).
  3. The 42-story Cathedral of Learning will be to your left. The Carnegie Museums will be on your right.
  4. Walk around the right side of the dinosaur to the Library, which is behind the museums.

From the East

  1. Board a 61A (East Pittsburgh), 61B (Braddock-Swissvale), 61C (McKeesport-Homestead), 67A (Monroeville), or 67F (Trafford) bus heading toward Downtown Pittsburgh with scheduled stops in Oakland. Do not take "Busway" trips.
  2. Leave the bus at the stop on Forbes Avenue at South Dithridge Street (just after South Craig Street). This stop is across the street from the Carnegie Museums.
  3. Cross the street at the light.
  4. Walk around the right side of the dinosaur to the Library, which is behind the museums.

From the South

South Side, Mount Oliver

  1. Take the 54C bus from Knoxville, Mount Oliver or the South Side.
  2. Get off the bus in Oakland at the dinosaur statue (the first stop after the Bigelow Boulevard / Schenley Drive intersection).
  3. The 42-story Cathedral of Learning will be to your left. The Carnegie Museums will be on your right.
  4. Walk around the right side of the dinosaur to the Library, which is behind the museums.

From the North

  1. Take a bus into downtown and then transfer to one of the buses that come from downtown to Oakland.

Or from the North Side:

  1. Take the 54C to Oakland, via Polish Hill.
    OR
    Take the 501 North Shore to Oakland, via downtown Pittsburgh. This bus route passes by the Carnegie Science Center and Three Rivers Stadium.
    OR
    Take the 500 that comes from West View, through Bellevue and the North Side to Oakland. It travels along 5th Ave.
  2. Leave the bus at the stop on Forbes Avenue at South Dithridge Street (just after South Craig Street). This stop is across the street from the Carnegie Museums.
  3. Cross the street at the light.
  4. Walk around the right side of the dinosaur to the Library, which is behind the museums.


By Automobile

Parking is available.

From Downtown Pittsburgh

  1. Drive east on Forbes Avenue approximately 4 miles to the intersection of Forbes Avenue and South Craig Street.
  2. The parking lot for the Carnegie complex is on the right at the traffic light.

From the East

Monroeville, Murrysville, Greensburg, Jeannette ... Harrisburg

  1. Take the Parkway East (I-376) west to the Oakland/PA Route 885N Exit (Bates Street).
  2. Follow Bates Street to Bouquet Street (Bates Street ends at the Bouquet intersection).
  3. Turn left and follow Bouquet to the traffic signal.
  4. Make a right on Forbes Avenue and proceed to South Craig Street (3rd traffic light)
  5. Make a right into the parking area behind the museums.
  6. After parking, follow signs to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

From the South (Routes 51 & 19)

Mt. Lebanon, Dormont, South Park, Brentwood, Pleasant Hills, Uniontown... West Virginia

  1. Take Route 51 or Route 19 north to the Liberty Tunnel.
  2. Proceed through the tunnel and across the Liberty Bridge.
  3. Use the right lane exit to the Boulevard of the Allies and turn right onto the Boulevard of the Allies going east.
  4. Take the Forbes Avenue exit from the Boulevard of the Allies.
  5. Proceed east on Forbes Avenue to South Craig Street and make a right into the parking area behind the museums.
  6. After parking, follow signs to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

From the West

Greentree, Robinson, Airport, Coraopolis...Ohio

  1. Take I-279 or I-79 to I-279. Follow I-279 northbound through the Fort Pitt Tunnels.
  2. Stay in the right lane when entering the tunnels. Upon exiting the tunnels, follow the sign to I-376 east (Monroeville) (right lanes).
  3. Exit I-376 at the Forbes Avenue exit, approximately 2 miles from the tunnels.
  4. Proceed on Forbes Avenue approximately 1.5 miles to 4400 Forbes Avenue and make a right into the parking area behind the museums at South Craig Street.
  5. After parking, follow signs to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

From the North via I-279

Wexford, New Castle, Meadville, Slippery Rock ...Erie

  1. Take I-279 southbound
  2. Take Exit 8A to I-579 (Veteran's Bridge/Monroeville)
  3. Cross the Veteran's Bridge and take the ramp for I-376 East (Oakland/Monroeville). This will put you on the Boulevard of the Allies (which eventually leads into the Parkway East).
  4. Proceed on the Boulevard of the Allies to the the Forbes Avenue Exit.
  5. Follow Forbes Avenue to 4400 Forbes Avenue
  6. Make a right into the parking area behind the museums at South Craig Street.
  7. After parking, follow signs to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

From the North (Route 28)

(Harmarville, Tarentum, Kittanning)
  1. Drive south on Route 28 toward downtown Pittsburgh.
  2. Take the Oakland / Lawrenceville exit and cross the 40th Street Bridge (Washington Crossing).
  3. Continue straight on 40th Street, crossing Penn Avenue.
  4. Turn left onto Liberty Avenue.
  5. Turn right at the next traffic light and cross the Bloomfield Bridge.
  6. Turn left onto Bigelow Boulevard at the opposite end.
  7. Stay in the left lane and follow North Craig Street (Bigelow bears off to the right).
  8. Continue straight on North Craig Street, crossing Fifth Avenue, onto South Craig Street which ends in the parking lot for the Carnegie complex.
OR
  1. Drive south on Route 28 toward downtown Pittsburgh.
  2. Cross the Highland Park Bridge.
  3. Pick up Washington Blvd, continue on Washington as it crosses Penn Ave. to become Fifth Avenue.
  4. Stay on Fifth until South Craig St.
  5. Turn left and follow it to the Carnegie parking lot.


Parking

The library/music hall/museum complex operates a six-level parking facility for cars and small vans. The lot is located directly behind the museum and can be accessed from the intersection of Forbes Avenue and South Craig Street. Bus and motorcoach parking is available in the bus lanes adjacent to Phipps Conservatory on Schenley Drive, behind the Carnegie Museums.

0-1 hour: $3.00
1-2 hours: $4.00
2-4 hours: $5.00
4-5 hours: $10.00
Over 5 hours: $15.00
Evening rate: $5.00 flat rate

Saturday and Sunday Parking Rates

$5 flat rate

On-Street Metered Parking

Metered parking is also available on Schenley Drive and Schenley Drive Ext.
