Storytelling and Folklore Collections
Our Storytelling and Folklore collections include traditional tales retold in picture book form as well as collections of tales. These materials celebrate the diversity of many cultures, and represent a variety of time periods.
The collection itself has a rich history that began during the early years of the Children's Department when storytimes included folktales told by librarians to groups of children from the community. As time passed, the folktale collection expanded in scope and number of works to provide stories for children, students, and educators to share and enjoy.
Storytelling resources include folklore indices, searchable by theme or motif, title, ethnicity, or story elements. Our storytelling resources also include: the history and philosophy of storytelling, performance guides and handbooks, and program planning.
