World Kaleidoscope presents Mimi Jong with Dariush Saghafi

Sunday, March 23, 2014 | Other Dates
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Mimi Jong has been performing erhu, an ancient Chinese two-stringed bowed instrument, since the age of eleven.

Dariush Saghafi began the study of santur, an Iranian hammered dulcimer, at the age of eleven with Ostad Abolhassan Saba, the foremost contemporary figure in Persian music.

Mimi Jong both teaches and performs with renowned jazz, folk and classical musicians and at music festivals. As a guest artist, Mimi has collaborated with the Mary Miller Dance Company, performed with erhu virtuoso Karen Han, pipa virtuoso Min Xiao Fen and has toured with poet/activist Huang Xiang. She founded “Jasmine Dynasty”, introducing Chinese dance and music to schools throughout western Pennsylvania. Straddling cultures, she cofounded AppalAsia, a fusion Appalachian–Asian musical performance ensemble. Currently, Mimi serves as the music program director for the Silk Screen Asian Arts & Culture Organization, and the board president and founding member of “HarmoniZing!” - inviting renowned performing artists for concerts and residencies in Pittsburgh, such as...

the highly respected musician and interpreter whose santur playing and style reflect the traditional excellence of the master players of the instrument, Dariush Saghafi's performances in Iran have included concerts in Tehran and Tabriz, both as soloist and in various ensembles. In the United States, he has performed to rave reviews at New York University, Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., as well as numerous concerts in the Pittsburgh area.

Saghafi believes that the musician must accomplish two things: first, appeal to a general audience, and then satisfy the demanding standard of the masters.

Witness the serendipitous World Kaleidoscope performance in which Mimi Jong and Dariush Saghafi fulfill this aural ideal!
