The People's University: Body of Work: The Ballerina

Saturday, March 2, 2013 | Other Dates
3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Join Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre (PBT) principal dancer Alexandra Kochis, Ballet Mistress Marianna Tcherkassky and Director of Marketing Aimee Waeltz as they present an interactive dialogue with audience members on ballet’s historical interactions with women and the female body. Join us as we explore the implications of “the cult of the ballerina,” how ballet has reinforced and broken down traditional gender roles and stereotypes and the perceptions (and misconceptions) of ballerinas in the larger cultural and social world. Lastly, delve into how gender and relationships are portrayed in PBT’s upcoming performance of Jardin aux lilas (Lilac Garden) by Antony Tudor at the August Wilson Center, March 8-17.
