Creating a Strategic Plan That Works

Wednesday, August 27, 2014
9:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Imagine you just spent five months on a strategic plan that involved an organizational assessment, surveying stakeholders, a hard won day-long retreat with board and staff and many hours spent in creating an action plan. You breathe a sigh of relief that you can get back to dealing with the day-to-day firefight. What you, or perhaps it’s your board, may not realize is that you just finished the easy part! Now you actually need to execute the plan you created. Strategic Planning has become more of a science over the years with a consistent process for creating the plans that nonprofits can follow. But the execution of these plans is where the art, and hard work, comes into play. In this workshop we will discuss:

• The real benefits of doing a plan (they aren’t just what you think they are)
• When you shouldn’t do a strategic plan and what you might need instead
• The planning process and when you should or shouldn’t hire a consultant
• The five things you need to do to create a plan that you can actually execute
• And three more things that you absolutely shouldn’t do when planning

The speakers are Leslie Bonner and Kate Sphar of BonnerSphar Consulting. Leslie and Kate are veteran nonprofit consultants and former senior consultants at Dewey & Kaye who have been providing planning and facilitation services to nonprofits. They bring a combined 40 years of experience working with over 300 nonprofit organizations. Kate and Leslie share strategic planning methodologies and philosophies, skills in nonprofit planning and assessment and an understanding of the challenges faced by nonprofits of all sizes and in all sectors. Leslie’s experience in organizational, leadership and board development and group dynamics is complemented by Kate’s strong knowledge of nonprofit sustainability (financial health, business planning and collaborations).
