In 1997 a partnership between Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and Point Park University was completed, to provide both academic and public library services to the general public and university students. This service would be handled out of the newly refurbished Bank Building, owned by Point Park University. The new facility was named the Library Center.

Following an analysis of rising operating costs and recognizing the importance a public library in downtown, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh sought a space that could be designed specifically for library services. In 2003 Carnegie Library identified a convenient downtown location on Smithfield Street. The renovation and redesign of this new space will result in a vibrant, state of the art facility that will be fully accessible, inviting, comfortable, organized for easy customer access to materials and information.

This site will also include a 49 seat meeting space that will be used for library programs and can be reserved for public use.

From 1997-2003 Carnegie Library had a partnership agreement with Point Park University (PPU) to provide joint academic and public library services to PPU students and the general public downtown. Carnegie Library operated the facility by providing staff and purchasing materials. PPU, who owns the building, provided the facility which included utilities, security and custodial services. The building became more and more expensive to operate.

To effect cost savings and continue library services in a Downtown location, Carnegie Library sought a more suitable space. The intent was to find a convenient location and design it specifically for a library. The renovation and redesign of the new space will result in vibrant, state-of-the-art facility that will be fully accessible, inviting and comfortable, organized for easy customer access to materials and information, and better suited for library programs.

About DesignGroup

DesignGroup of Columbus, Ohio is helping CLP create a space program for each library. Using ideas and feedback gathered in community meetings and through staff surveys, DesignGroup creates a "bubble diagram" to reflect the multiple needs for library space as well as a detailed list of all the functional requirements of the spaces to be included in the renovated facility.

The space program accounts for all elements of space usage including material storage, access, collection sizes, both print and electronic anticipating future growth and circulation for library employees and customers. DesignGroup has provided similar services for other public library systems including the Columbus Metropolitan Library System's Main Branch and suburban libraries and the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library system.
