The ceiling murals above the Tennessee marble stairs leading from the first to the second floor at the Main Library in Oakland, and other murals found throughout the building, were installed in 1907, under the direction of decorator Elmer Ellsworth Garnsey (1862-1946). He also was involved in the decoration of the Boston Public Library and the Library of Congress.
